VERIFYING YOUR IDENTITY

You will need to provide two forms of identity documents with your application. At least one photographic identity document is required with most applications. In exceptional cases the bank may accept your application without a photographic identity documentation. In such circumstances, we may request two or more of non-photographic identifying documents to help establish your identity.

Accepted Identity Documents

Photographic documents

1. Current Driver's Licence issued by an Australian State or Territory

2. An Australian passport (current or expired within the last 2 years)

3. A current passport issued by an overseas government*

4. National Identity Card or Photo ID Card issued by an Australian State or Territory

5. Firearms license issued by an Australian State or Territory

6. Australian Proof of Age card issued by an Australian State or Territory

Non-photographic documents

1. Birth certificate issued in Australia or overseas*

2. Medicare card

3. Centrelink Pension Card or Centrelink Health Card

4. Australian citizenship certificate, or citizenship certificate issued by an overseas government*

5. Australian Department of Veteran’s Affairs Pension Concession Card

6. Rates notice issued by a local government body within the last 3 months containing your full name and current address

7. Income Tax Assessment Notice issued by the Australian Tax Office within the last 12 months

8. Utility bill issued by a utility provider within the last 3 months containing your full name and current address

9. State or Federal Government issued document containing your full name and current address

10. Bank or credit card statement containing your full name and current address

11. Tenancy or lease agreement containing your full name and current address

12. Pay slip or letter from employer containing your full name and current address

Please note: If originals identity documents are not produced, then a certified copy is required. Please reference FAQs Nos 2 & 3 for details of authorised certifiers.

*Documents not in English must be accompanied by an English translation prepared by a National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) accredited certifier.

The following are all authorised certifiers.

1. Justice of the Peace

2. A person who is enrolled on the role of the Supreme Court of a State or Territory, or the High Court of Australia, as a legal practitioner (however described).

3. A person who, under a State or Territory law, is currently licensed or registered to practice in one of the following occupations:

a. Chiropractor

b. Dentist

c. Legal practitioner

d. medical practitioner

e. Nurse

f. Optometrist

g. Patent attorney

h. Pharmacist

i. Physiotherapist

j. Psychologist

k. Trademarks attorney

l. Veterinary surgeon

4. Australian Consular Officer or Australian Diplomatic Officer (within the meaning of the Consular Fees Act 1955).

5. Employee of the Australian Trade Commission who is:

a. in a country or place outside Australia; and

b. authorized under paragraph 3 (d) of the Consular Fees Act 1955; and

c. exercising his or her function in that place

6. Employee of the Commonwealth who is:

a. in a country or place outside Australia; and

b. authorized under paragraph 3 (c) of the Consular Fees Act 1955; and

c. exercising his or her function in that place

7. Marriage celebrant registered under Subdivision C of Division 1 of Part IV of the Marriage Act 1961.

8. Member of Chartered Secretaries Australia.

9. Member of Engineers Australia, other than at the grade of student.

10. Member of the Association of Taxation and Management Accountants

11. Member of the ADF who is:

a. an officer; or

b. a non-commissioned officer within the meaning of the Defence Force Discipline Act 1982 with 2 or more years of continuous service; or

c. a warrant officer within the meaning of that Act.

12. Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, the Australian Society of Certified Practicing as Accountants, or the National Institute of Accountants.

13. Member of:

a. the Parliament of the Commonwealth; or

b. the Parliament of a State; or

c. a Territory legislature; or

d. a local government authority of a State or Territory

14.Minister of religion registered under Subdivision A of Division 1 of Part IV of the Marriage Act 1961.

15.Notary public.

16.Permanent employee of the Australian Postal Corporation with 2 or more years of continuous service who is employed in an office supplying postal services to the public.

17. Permanent employee of:

a. the Commonwealth or a Commonwealth authority; or

b. a State or Territory or a State or Territory authority; or

c. a local government authority.

with 2 or more years of continuous service who is not specified in another item in this Part

18. Police officer.

19. Sheriff

20.Teacher employed on a full-time basis at a school or tertiary education institution

21.Member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy

22. An officer with, or authorised representative of, a holder of an Australian financial services license, having 2 or more continuous years of service with one or more licensees.

23. An officer with, or a credit representative of, a holder of an Australian credit license, having 2 or more years of continuous service with one or more licenses.

An authorised certifier must examine the original and the copy of the identifying document.

To certify the document, the authorised certifier must write the following wording or similar on the copy of the identifying document or on a certificate relating to the identifying document (noting that some certifiers use stamps with standard wording):

Important note: The certification date on the copy of the identifying document must not be more than 12 months old. If the document has multiple pages, the authorised certifier may add their certification to the first page and then sign or initial each subsequent page.

If you live overseas, the below certified documents are accepted:

Proof of identity 

  • An Australian passport (current or expired within the last 2 years);

OR

  • A current passport issued by an overseas government*; or
  • A document issued by an overseas government or the United Nations for the purpose of international travel, that contains a photograph and your signature*

AND

One of the following:

  • A driver's license or permit issued by an overseas country that contains your full name, photograph and overseas residential address*; or
  • A utility bill containing your full name and overseas residential address*.

*Documents not in English must be accompanied by an English translation prepared by a NAATI accredited certifier.
 

  1. The following are all authorised certifiers for overseas residents. A Public Notary authorized to administer an oath or affirmation or to authenticate documents.
  2. An Australian consular officer or an Australian diplomatic officer.
  3. An employee of the Australian Trade Commission.
  4. An employee of the Commonwealth working overseas in official capacity.

Where documents are certified outside Australia, the certifier must use their official stamp and quote their registration number or the relevant law that qualifies them to certify documents. They must also print their full name, qualification, registration/license number and contact number.
 

Yes, you can email certified documents to us.  AMB will accept clearly legible certified copies or documents and identification via email to service@australianmilitarybank.com.au.  Note, certified copies of documents must include the front and back of the document and be a coloured copy.  We may request a better-quality copy of certified documents and identification if the copy provided is unclear or illegible.
